Bohemian Waxwings

Lots of Waxwings

The first day of winter and fairly warm.  You can't knock that in the north.  I had a fun day following the flocks of Bohemian Waxwings around Whitehorse, trying for a decent photo or two.  I really didn't have anything that was up to par in my file.

The birds were quite co-operative but it was almost noon before there was any good light.

Right in the middle of one flock was a bird I did't recognize.  From my bird book, it looks like a  Townsend's Solitaire.  It is listed as "uncommon" and did seem to be enjoying the winter weather.

MORE SWANS

Drove up to Kluane hoping to see some elk.  I didn't.  Missed a lynx shot by being half a second too slow on the shutter.  There were Trumpeter Swans on Kluane Lake and Dezadeash Lake so I photographed swans.

FALL ELK RUT

Went out the other morning to see if there were any elk wanting their photo taken.  Drove for about an hour without seeing anything.  I was about to turn around and head home when I went around a curve and there was a nice bull in the ditch, bulging his heart out.  He just moved along the ditch for over an hour--doing nothing but looking for more elk.

LAST RV OUTING OF THE SEASON

Off to the Haines Summit hoping to see the bears again in fall colours.  No bears but the colours in the Dezadeash Lake area were at their prime.  Colours before that were almost finished.   Temperatures were some of the best of the years.  Black Flies out big time.

KENO CITY, YUKON

Just returned from a trip to the Keno area.  Hadn't been there in ten years or enjoyed photographing the old mining centre and wildlife along the way.

HAINES ROAD GRIZZLIES

Busy Grizzly Bears

We have just spent several days on the Haines Road.  Many Grizzly Bears and lots of other wildlife--moose, lynx, muskrat, swans and others.  One morning we saw three bears and a lynx within ten minutes of leaving camp and a total of eleven bears by days end.  Most of the bears were grizzlies with the odd Black thrown in.
